AUSTIN, TX — Yesterday, Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) hosted their biannual lobby day at the Texas Legislature and announced the release of both their House Budget Scorecard and the final iteration of vote.yct.org.

Each Session, Young Conservatives of Texas members from across the state congregate in Austin to lobby the legislature about their legislative priorities.

“It is important for legislators to see that there are conservative college students out there,” said Baylor YCT member Brandon Waltens. “We enjoyed speaking with legislators and staff about the issues, and most were really receptive to our message and goals.”

In addition to lobbying this week, YCT released the organization’s first ever scorecard of the House Budget.

“Last Thursday’s budget process was a complete and total failure for conservatism,” said YCT State Chairman Jeff Morris. “While many common sense spending reforms were proposed, it seemed only amendments that grew government and decreased efficiency were adopted.”

Perhaps the best example of this was the initial vote to expand Medicaid. While legislators eventually passed a motion to reconsider this vote, the fact that it was able to pass on the first vote shows a lack of organization and communication.

“Liberal legislators walked in with a plan and executed it,” said YCT Senior Vice Chairman Jeramy Kitchen. “At the same time, conservatives walked in ill-prepared for the fight and lost almost every battle of substance.”

AUSTIN, TX — Today, Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) announced their new website to inform legislators and citizens about good and bad legislation filed in the Texas House and Senate.

YCT has been shaping Texas politics for over 35 years and produces the longest running and most respected ratings of the Texas Legislature. Prior to each Session, YCT releases a legislative agenda describing the types of bills they hope to see proposed by legislators.

“This project in a lot of ways is the natural bridge between our agenda and our ratings,” said YCT State Chairman Jeff Morris. “Many legislators have asked how to do better on our ratings—this is our answer.”

The website will roll out in two parts. Today the site will include the top 5 bills per topic, per chamber; early next month, it will include every bill YCT is taking a stance on. The organization will release their stance on just over 500 bills.

“We hope this interactive site will motivate legislators to get these bills out of committee and to the floors of both chambers for a vote,” said YCT Senior Vice Chairman Jeramy Kitchen. “If you are a citizen and see particular bills you are passionate about, please contact your representatives and make your voice heard.”

Austin, TX — Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) wishes to bring to your attention a rather absurd situation which is developing in the aftermath of State Senator Wendy Davis’ reelection in Senate District 10. Davis defeated Republican Representative Mark Shelton to earn a second term in the state’s upper chamber.

Since last Tuesday’s election, Shelton general consultant Bryan Eppstein has circulated a memo which we have attached to this email in which he defends his management of the Senate District 10 race, arguing rather absurdly that the election was “stolen” by Senator Davis. YCT has performed our own analysis of the precinct-by-precinct election results in Senate District 10 which is also attached to this email. Our analysis tells a very different story of Eppstein’s failure as a consultant in the race.  A review of the numbers shows that Romney won Senate District 10 with more than 54% of the vote.  In precinct after precinct, Romney supporters crossed over en masse to vote for Davis.  This, despite the fact that Senator Davis has an extremely liberal voting record that is out-of-touch with the conservative voters in Senate District 10.

Bryan Eppstein should not be allowed to continue to obfuscate on his failure as a general consultant on behalf of Representative Mark Shelton, a candidate YCT was proud to endorse in the Senate District 10 race. There have been no allegations of fraud or wrongdoing in the race. To say that the election was “stolen” or even to point the blame for the loss at heavily Democratic precincts in Senate District 10 is simply incorrect. It is misleading and it demonstrates a deep misunderstanding on the part of Bryan Eppstein of the basics of how elections are won and lost.

YCT has observed Bryan Eppstein for years.  We strongly believe that Eppstein’s reputation as this state’s foremost Republican political consultant is not well deserved. He consistently runs liberal candidates in Republican primaries and encourages them to run openly as liberals. When he does have conservative clients, he fails to defend their conservatism, and refuses to work with the conservative grassroots to support their election. Bryan Eppstein is a bad general consultant. More importantly though, he is no friend of the conservative movement in Texas.

YCT urges conservatives to seek representation elsewhere and to disassociate themselves from Bryan Eppstein as much as possible. Conservative voters should not waste their time, energy, or money supporting candidates who will have their chances of election diminished by a consultant who is completely out-of-touch with the conservative grassroots. Eppstein will continue to mismanage campaigns because he does not know how to appeal to Republican voters or effectively articulate foundational conservative ideas. Bryan Eppstein will continue to fail his clients. And if conservatives continue to associate with Bryan Eppstein, his failure will be our failure.

Austin, TX—Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) today condemned the call for more revenue made by Trent McKnight, GOP candidate for State Representative in House District 68. Mr. McKnight spoke at a candidate forum in Quanah, TX on June 19th where he claimed public education in Texas has “both a spending and a revenue problem and we need to be able to address both.”

“To say public education needs more revenue while claiming to be a conservative on the campaign trail is talking out of both sides of his mouth,” said Tony McDonald, YCT Senior Vice Chairman. “Texas has increased spending on public education nearly five times more than the rate of enrollment growth plus population and inflation over the past 10 years. But we have yet to see any demonstrable result from that spending. It’s clear to any conservative that throwing more money at the problem is not the answer.”

McKnight is in a runoff against Drew Springer, a financial services manager from Muenster, TX. In addition to YCT, Springer has received the endorsement of Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, Texas Right to Life, Texas Home School Coalition and Concerned Women for America. McKnight on the other hand has been endorsed by Parent PAC, a public education administrator lobby group funded primarily by Democrats. Parent PAC has given money to liberal challengers to conservative legislators such as Van Taylor, Dan Flynn, and Charles Perry.

“It’s no surprise that Trent McKnight is on the side of throwing more money into a broken system. After all, Mr. McKnight has voted with the party supporting a “Spend More Now. Ask Questions Later.” philosophy his entire life – only switching from being a Democrat to being a Republican in order to run for State Representative,” said YCT State Chairman Jeff Morris. “At least we now have him on record to show voters who the real conservative is in HD 68.”

Austin, TX — Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) today filed an open records request with the Office of the Lt. Governor requesting that the office turnover all speeches that have been deleted, or “archived” by the Lt. Governor’s legislative office since he has declared his candidacy for the United States Senate in addition to any communications between the Lt. Governor’s office and the Secretary of the Senate ordering those deletions to be made. The request was in response to news which broke Wednesday that the Lt. Governor’s office had deleted a controversial speech delivered by the Lt. Governor from his state website.

In the speech, delivered in 2007 by Lt. Governor Dewhurst upon receiving the “Mr. South Texas” award, Dewhurst stated that he supported “a guest worker program for those here today illegally.” This stance had drawn fire for being at odds with Mr. Dewhurst’s more recent comments in the US Senate race. Specifically, in a debate hosted by KERA on June 22nd, Mr. Dewhurst claimed that he didn’t “support a guest worker program” and “never had.” The contradictory “Mr. South Texas” speech was deleted from the Lt. Governor’s website sometime after Mr. Dewhurst made his false claim in the KERA Debate.

“We have known throughout this campaign that the Lt. Governor is running away from his record,” said Jeff Morris, YCT State Chairman. “But it is appalling that Mr. Dewhurst would try to delete the past in his effort to pull the wool over Texas voters’ eyes. If he expects to be our next Senator, Mr. Dewhurst should stand-by his moderate record and apologize for it, not try to hide from it, or deceive voters about it. We have filed our open records request so that Texas voters can know the full truth about David Dewhurst’s record.”

The request comes in response to statements by a spokesman from the Lt. Governor’s office made to the Associated Press on Wednesday confirming that his office had requested that his speeches be removed from his state website when he entered the US Senate race last year. The spokesman also confirmed that more recent efforts were made by the Lt. Governor’s office to ensure that the speeches were, in fact, removed from his state website.

YCT’s open records request, which is attached, asks the Lt. Governor’s office to provide Young Conservatives of Texas with all pages deleted from the Lt. Governor’s website in the past two years and any communications between the Lt. Governor’s office and the Secretary of the Senate ordering those deletions to be made.

The Lt. Governor’s office is required, by law, to comply with the request within 10 business days. The group hopes that the Office will comply with their obligations under the law in time for Texas voters to see the speeches before the US Senate runoff election on July 31st

Austin, TX — Today the David Dewhurst Campaign unveiled a race-baiting attack ad against fellow Senatorial candidate Ted Cruz, alleging that Cruz supports “amnesty.” The radio advertisement baselessly alleges that Cruz supports amnesty solely because he has been involved with two Hispanic civic organizations.

“The only reason the Dewhurst campaign is making this attack is because Ted Cruz spells his name with a “z,” said Tony McDonald, YCT Senior Vice Chairman. “The Dewhurst campaign is spending more than $2 Million over the next four days to try to convince Republican voters that no Hispanic candidate can ever oppose illegal immigration.”

The advertisement is a lie. Ted Cruz has always opposed amnesty and illegal immigration. He has called for tripling the size of our border patrol. He supports building a wall across our entire southern border. As Solicitor General, Ted Cruz defended US sovereignty when the world court demanded that an illegal immigrant in Houston be released from death row after brutally gang-raping and murdering a little girl. Cruz successfully defended the sovereignty of US courts before the Supreme Court and ensured that Texas was able to serve justice against the heinous crime.

The most recent race-baiting attack ad comes on the heels of a meteoric rise in the polls by Ted Cruz. In recent weeks, Cruz has received the endorsement of former presidential candidates Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum, as well as the endorsement of conservative radio host Sean Hannity.

“This most recent attack is particularly disgusting given David Dewhurst’s pathetic track record on illegal immigration,” said Jeff Morris, YCT State Chairman. “Dewhurst killed legislation that would have repealed in-state tuition for illegal immigrants by sending it to a committee chaired by liberal Democrat Judith Zaffirini. Last session, Dewhurst allowed state Senator Robert Duncan to kill a bill that would have finally ended sanctuary cities in Texas. Dewhurst has waffled on whether he would support a border wall and on what kind of defense he would propose. It is Dewhurst who is weak on illegal immigration, not Cruz.”
